Mrs Flax is the matriarchal character in 90's movie Mermaids, with daughters played by Winnona Ryder and Christina Ricci. Did I mention that Mrs Flax is played by Cher? Need I say more? I could probably end there, but I won’t.
Set in early 1960's America, Cher plays a single Mum with two girls moving from man to man and town to town. I first met Mrs Flax when I was seven or eight years old. I vividly remember her beehive hair, polka dot dresses and silk kimonos. I had never been so infatuated by style before. I fell so hard for Cher in this film that I wanted to move to the States, drive a Cadillac and be a single mum, or ‘mom’ rather. Yes, even at eight years old.
Mrs Flax’s quick wit and stubborn strength are intensified through her killer cut outfits. No dowdy sweater-sets and shapeless shifts here. We’re talking curve skimming wiggle dresses, capri pants and Jackie- esque acrylic glasses. Even her casual look makes my stylephile head spin with high waisted jeans and oversized mohair jumpers.
I don’t know about you but the way I dress can have an enormous impact on how I feel, revisiting my love for Mrs Flax has reminded me of this and I’m ready to bring back the ‘sass’ that I ever so wanted, if somewhat worryingly at aged eight.
